Mpofu, McCaffrey And Marzerka-Kinoshita Team Go Undefeated For Goucher Women's Tennis At Goucher Invitational
BALTIMORE, Md. – Mandile Mpofu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School), Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) and the doubles team of Katie Marzerka (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) and Kyoko Kinoshita (Tokyo, Japan/Tilton School [N.H.]) each completed an undefeated weekend for the Goucher women's tennis team at the Goucher Invitational on Sunday.
Mpofu won her Flight B with a 4-0 record after winning each match in straight sets and only allowed 11 games in her eight sets. After winning her first two matches on Saturday, the senior defeated Immaculata's Morgan Jacob 6-1, 6-2 and Marywood's Allison Bashore 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday to go undefeated on the weekend and is 6-0 in singles in her final semester.
Just like Mpofu, McCaffrey has not lost a a match on the year. The freshman went 2-0 on each day of the invitational including a 6-0, 6-0 win against Marywood's Gina Babcock and 6-2, 6-0 against Richard Stockton's Brooke Samuels. McCaffrey allowed just nine games in her eight sets to win Flight C.
Marzerka and Kinoshita had a similar experience in Doubles A that Mpofu and McCaffrey had in singles play. The duo won their Doubles A Flight with a 4-0 record and only allowed 10 games in their eight sets. After taking the first two matches on Saturday, the tandem defeated Frostburg State's Madison Toothman and Cherise Jenkins 6-1, 6-2 and Richard Stockton's Sarah Richardson and Brianna McCarthy 6-3, 6-1.
Anais Gill (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) won her first three matches of the invitational and finished 3-1 to finish second in Flight A singles. The sophomore started 2-0 on Saturday and then defeated Danielle Ognonowski of Marywood 6-3, 6-2 to start the final day of competition. Gill then lost her final match to Immaculata's Caleigh Masterman 6-3, 5-7, 10-3.
Ali Gorson-Morrow (Broomall, Pa./Barrack Hebrew Academy) won her first and last match in the two days to finish 2-2. After going 1-1 on the first day, Gorson-Morrow fell to Immaculata's Elizabeth Liscomb 6-3, 6-1, but then ended her tournament on a high with a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Marywood's Sarah Pagnanelli.
Alex Coffin (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and Sara Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) went 0-4 in the tournament, but battled tough taking two sets to a tiebreaker and going three sets in a pair of matches. The duo lost 6-2, 6-4 to Marywood's Brooke Panek and Lyndsey Medric and then took Frostburg State's Sarah Cartwright and Allison Paul to three sets in a 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 defeat.
Goucher wraps up the fall season next weekend on Family Weekend against Lebanon Valley on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and York (Pa.) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The match against Lebanon Valley will serve as Mpofu's senior game since she is graduating in December and the match will be broadcasted live on the Goucher Sports Network.
