Mpofu Named Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Athlete Of The Week
BALTIMORE, Md. – Mandile Mpofu (Harare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School), a member of the Goucher women's tennis team, is wrapping up her collegiate career nicely. She is undefeated in the fall and has added the Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week honor for the week of September 21-27 to resume in her final semester. It is the first time in her career that she has earned the weekly honor.
Mpofu, who will be graduating in December, has made the most of her final season. She has gone 6-0 in singles in the fall including 4-0 this weekend at the Goucher Invitational where she only gave up 11 games in four-straight set wins to take the Flight B Singles title. Mpofu defeated Frostburg State's Shea Przywieczerski (6-1, 6-0), Richard Stockton's Audrey van Schalkwyk (6-2, 6-2), Immaculata's Morgan Jacob (6-1, 6-2) and Marywood's Allison Bashore, (6-2, 6-1) in straight sets.
For her career, Mpofu is 21-19 in singles matches and 12-18 in dual matches, but has posted a 17-6 overall mark and a 10-6 record in dual matches in her last two seasons. The senior is 15-17 overall in doubles play in her career including 12-7 overall and 11-7 with her partner Anais Gill (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) in the last two years.
Gill is the last Gopher to earn the weekly honor after taking the recognition twice last year. Gill and Mpofu were also named to the All-Landmark Conference second team last season.
Mpofu will be playing in her final two matches of her collegiate career this weekend against Lebanon Valley on Friday at 3 p.m. and against York (Pa.) on Saturday at 12 p.m. Mpofu will be honored before the match against Lebanon Valley and the contest will be streamed on the Goucher Sports Network.
