Goucher Women's Tennis Selected Fourth In Landmark Conference Preseason Poll
BALTIMORE, Md. – After making the Landmark Conference women's tennis postseason for the first time since 2013 as the No. 4 seed in 2019, Goucher College has been picked to return to the postseason in 2020 after being selected fourth in the Landmark Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll.
Moravian College, the team the Gophers played in the conference semifinals last season, has been dubbed as the preseason favorite after receiving six first-place votes and 68 points. The University of Scranton picked up the other two first-place selections to finish second in the poll while Elizabethtown College (40 points), Goucher (38 points), Drew University (24 points), Catholic University of America (22 points), Susquehanna University (12 points) and Juniata College (8 points) rounded out the eight-team poll.
The Gophers return a majority of the team that went 10-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play, including reigning Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and all-conference first-team selection Anais Gill (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College). The sophomore went 13-7 on the year including 5-2 in conference singles matches as a freshman.
Katie Marzerka (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) also returns after going 10-6 overall and 4-1 in league matches last season. Freshman Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) made a great impression in the fall after winning her first six singles matches before falling in the fall finale.
Head coach Steve Baum losses Mandile Mpofu, who graduated in December and was named to the doubles all-conference second-team selection with Gill last year, but gains Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), who played volleyball in the fall along with Haddie Hill (San Antonio, Texas/The Episcopal School of Texas) and Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) after both players studied abroad in the fall for the spring semester.
Goucher, who went 2-2 in the fall, is scheduled to open the spring season at Stevenson University on March 13. Match time is 2 p.m. The Gophers are scheduled to make its home debut and play the inaugural match on the Evelyn Dyke Schoedl '62 Tennis Center on March 25 against Washington College at 3:30 p.m.
