Goucher Athletics Announces Robert Lewand Team Academic Award
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Goucher College women's tennis team has been named the Robert Lewand Team Academic Award winner. All 10 members of the team boasted at least a 3.2 grade-point average and collectively had a 3.7 grade point average. The squad has earned the honor for the fourth-straight year.
The Robert Lewand Team Academic Achievement Award is presented annually to the athletics team whose members achieved the highest grade point average over the previous two semesters.
"This shows how much emphasis we put on our academic success as well as the success we try to have on the court," said head coach Steve Baum. "It comes with a lot of hard work with a little bit of sacrifice and I know that my team has done a really good job of showcasing that the student comes first in Goucher athletics."
All nine student-athletes that were eligible for the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll received the recognition on Wednesday. To be eligible for the conference award a student-athlete has to be at least a sophomore and maintain at least a 3.2 grade point average.
Ali Gorson-Marrow (Broomall, Pa./Barrack Hebrew Academy), Katie Marzerka (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingwood Regional) and Mandile Mpofu (Haare, Zimbabwe/Arundel School) have been named to the Landmark Conference honor roll all three years of eligibility. Morgan Hartman (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock Union) (women's tennis), Sara Healy (Waterford, Va./Woodgrove) (women's tennis) and Kyoko Kinoshita (Tokyo, Japan/Tilton School [N.H.]) (women's tennis) have been named to the conference honor roll twice while Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon), Anais Gill (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) and Haddie Hill (San Antonio, Texas/The Episcopal School of Texas) were named to the league academic award in their first year of eligibility. Ceri McCaffrey (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) also boasts at least a 3.2 grade point average as freshman.
"It's an honor to receive this award," said Hartman, who spoke on behalf of the team. "I know that each of the women on this team can tell you that it is not easy being a full-time student-athlete, a member of clubs and organizations on campus and having jobs. I think this award epitomizes Division III spirit in the importance of the balance between student life, academics and athletics all in one."
While women's tennis won the academic award, some other Gophers teams have also excelled in the classroom over the last two semesters. Field hockey (3.41 GPA), women's volleyball (3.39 GPA), women's cross country (3.37 GPA), women's soccer (3.36 GPA), women's swimming (3.30 GPA), women's golf (3.24 GPA), equestrian (3.23 GPA) and women's basketball (3.18 GPA) also boasted great grade-point averages over this time.
