TOWSON, Md. - First-place performances in four events helped Goucher finish in fourth place, just three points in back of Loyola (Md.), at today's Goucher Track & Field Classic.
Sheba Newman-Blount (Lanham, MD/Bishop Ireton) and Dana Macaluso (Huntington, NY/Huntington) both scored in three individual events. Newman-Blount placed first in the triple jump, setting a new outdoor school record with her effort of 32-feet, 9.75-inches, second in the 100-meter dash (:13.44) and third in the long jump (15-feet, 2-inches); Macaluso turned in the fastest time of the meet in the 200-meter dash (:27.12), was runner-up in the long jump (15-feet, 2-inches) and placed fifth in the triple jump (29-feet, 5.25-inches).
Dayna Mizzer (Prince Frederick, MD/Calvert) was the first to cross the finish line in the 100-meter hurdles as she completed the event in :16.61, plus she placed third in the high jump (4-feet, 6-inches).
Newman-Blount, Mizzer, Catherine Abbondanza (Yarmouth, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) and Macaluso formed Goucher's 4 x 100-meter relay that finished in first place with its time of :52.98. In the 4 x 400-meter relay, the Goucher foursome of Newman-Blount, Mizzer, Becky Foner (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) and J. Fraley Coles (The Plains, VA/Highland School) placed second (4:35.96).
Samantha Solomon (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) completed the 400-meter run in 1:16.10, good for fourth place, and Kate Young (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run (11:52.84). Abby Cooney (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) scored in two field events as she placed second in the hammer throw (94-feet, 7-inches) and fourth in the discus (90-feet, 3-inches); Abbondanza finished sixth in the javelin (87-feet, 11-inches).
Ursinus won the team title with 185 points. York finished 55 points back in second place, followed by Loyola (86 points) in third, Goucher (83), Hagerstown Community (48), McDaniel (32) and Johns Hopkins (22).
