Smith Named Landmark Indoor Track Player of the Week

TOWSON, Md. — After breaking both the Goucher and Landmark Conference records in the 60-meter dash this weekend, Kamillah Smith (Northampton, Mass./Amherst Regional) was recognized today as the conference's Women's Indoor Track Player of the Week.

The award is the first at Goucher for Smith, who actually broke her personal best time in the event twice at the Bow-Tie Classic on Saturday. In the preliminary round, she became the first Goucher runner to break eight seconds, completing the race in 7.96.

That tied her with Moravian's Rachel Beck for the fastest time in conference history. Beck's mark had stood alone since 2008, but Smith surpassed her in the meet's finals with a time of 7.91 seconds. That placed her second in the event, behind Gwynned-Mercy's Zakiyyah Richardson, and it earned the Gophers eight points. Smith's time is currently the fourth-fastest in NCAA Division III this season.

Smith had previously set the Goucher record at the 60-meter distance last February when she ran an 8.11 at the Frank Colden Invitational. She also added an eighth-place finish at the 200-meter distance this weekend, completing the event in 27.13 and setting another personal best time in the process.

Smith becomes the ninth different Gopher to earn Player of the Week recognition this year, and Goucher has won 11 Player of the Week awards overall in 2013-14.

The women's indoor track & field team returns to action at the Hagerstown Invitational this Saturday.
