ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Although she had to settle for being the runner-up in the 55-meter dash today at the Muhlenberg Invitational, Goucher's Kamillah Smith (Northampton, Mass./Amherst Regional) at least had the satisfaction of breaking the school record in the event.
In the seventh and final heat, Smith and Wesley's Elizsha Streeter were separated by just 1-hundredth of a second as they sprinted across the finish line. Streeter was awarded first place with a time of :07.39, while Smith was clocked at :07.40. Still, that was eight-hundredths of a second faster than the school record (:07.48) that Smith set at this same meet in 2013 as a freshman.
Smith also took third place at today's meet in the 200-meter dash with her time of :27.63, which ranks No. 8 all-time in the history of Goucher's women's indoor track and field program.
Kathryn Walker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York), who were competing indoors for the first time in two years after studying abroad last season, both placed among the top five finishers in the mile run. Walker completed the event in 5:55.90, good for third place, and Zidanic was two spots back in fifth (6:02.08).
Zidanic also placed fourth overall in the 1,000-meter run with the fifth-fastest time in program history (3:40.18).
The Gophers also took sixth place in two events today. In the shot put competition, Maafio Appiah-Padi (Edmonton, Alberta/Lewisburg Area) landed in the No. 6 position among the 13 entrants with an effort of 9.23 meters (30' 3 1/2"); in the 55-meter hurdles, Danielle Granger (Amherst, Va./Amherst County) posted a time of :9.70 to take sixth place.
