TOWSON, Md. – Goucher beat out the U.S. Merchant Marine
Academy for fifth place at the 2009 Landmark Conference Outdoor
Track & Field Championships by scoring in eight individual
events and a relay during the two-day event conducted in Gopher
Stadium.
Sheba Newman-Blount (Lanham, Md./Bishop Ireton) and Dana Macaluso (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) both earned points in three individual events and were on Goucher's entry in the 4 x 400-meter relay that placed fifth overall.
Newman-Blount secured a total of 12 points by placing third in the 400-meter hurdles and sixth in both the 100-meter dash and triple jump. She completed the 400 hurdles in 1:07.38 and the 100 in :13.01, which is a personal best, and she went 32-feet, 10.25-inches in the triple jump.
Macaluso was able to produce six points through her sixth-place performance in the 400-meter run (1:02.09), an effort of 16-feet, 3.75-inches which landed her in seventh place in the long jump and an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (:27.20).
Newman-Blount and Macaluso were joined by Caitlin Biggers (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) and Kanika Staten (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) in the 4 x 400. Goucher's time in that event was 4:15.91.
Abby Cooney (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) came away with points for the Gophers in a pair of events, picking up three points by placing sixth in the hammer throw (113-feet, 6-inches) and two more for her seventh-place effort in the discus (91-feet, 9-inches).
The Gophers came up with a total of 34 points, giving them a 13-point edge over Merchant Marine for fifth place behind Moravian (285 points), Susquehanna (240.5), Juniata (139.5) and Catholic (62).
