TOWSON, Md. - Goucher had McDaniel on the ropes in each of the first two games this evening, but then couldn't hang with the Green Terror in the third game and wound up suffering a 3-0 loss in front of a crowd of 140 in the Sports & Recreation Center.
Game scores were 30-27, 30-27, 30-18.
The Gophers held a lead as late as 26-25 in the second game of the best-of-five match between the in-state rivals, but McDaniel assumed a 2-0 lead in games by scoring the final three points, wrapping up the win on a kill by Lanni Resinger.
The third game seemed destined to be another close encounter as the Green Terror (2-1) held a slim 17-15 lead before reeling off 11 unanswered points to assume a 28-15 advantage.
Megan Smith (Honolulu, HI/Long Beach Polytechnic) and Kasey Quinn (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) supplied the Gophers (2-3) with 24 kills and 40 digs during the three-game-match, while Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Dehli, India/American Embassy School) and Catie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, CA/Laguna Blanca) shared 27 assists and 21 digs.
Sarah Kendall (North Plainfield, NJ/Rutgers Prep) finished with a match-high 23 digs.
The win was McDaniel's seventh straight over Goucher in the all-time series between the two schools. The Gophers last defeated the Green Terror on Sept. 6, 1997.
