BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher lasted five sets against Johns Hopkins in the first match and four against Geneva in the second match, but couldn't break through to win either match today at the ASICS Invitational.
The Gophers (0-2), who prevailed in seven of the eight matches last season that went past three sets, bowed to the Blue Jays, 3-2, and the Golden Tornadoes, 3-1. Game scores were 22-25, 25-8, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13 against Johns Hopkins and 22-25, 25-11, 25-19, 25-20 against Geneva.
Megan Smith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Long Beach Polytechnic), who broke the school record for kills in a season in 2008, was credited with team-high totals of 19 kills and 21 digs in the match against Johns Hopkins. Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Delhi, India/American Embassy School) supplied the Gophers with a career-high 42 assists.
Sauvage-Mar picked up 30 more assists and Rebecca Schaefer (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) led Goucher with 16 digs in the Geneva match.
