TOWSON, Md. – Playing at home for the first time all season, Goucher dropped the first two sets tonight before storming back to defeat Notre Dame (Md.), 3-2.
Game scores were 15-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-14, 15-12.
Carolyn Crissey (Philadelphia, Pa./Creative & Performing Arts) bunched five of the eight kills she executed during the match into the third set, including one at set point.
There had already been six ties and three lead changes by the time Goucher won the serve back in the fourth set, trailing 10-9. The Gophers (6-8) won the next nine points with Katharine Genton (Arlington, Va./Cushing Academy) serving, earning three of the points on service aces by the sophomore defensive specialist.
A kill by Questina Johnson (Parkville, Md./Parkville) clinched the fourth set, evening the match at 2-2.
Goucher didn't go ahead to stay in the decisive fifth set until winning a point on a service error by the Gators (3-3) to take a 12-11 lead. Genton followed with her fourth service ace of the match, making the score 13-11.
After the two teams traded service errors, the Gophers completed their comeback thanks to an attack error by the Gators on match point.
Johnson paced the Gophers in kills with 10 and Catie Ditmore (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca) in digs with 22. Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Dehli, India/American Embassy School) contributed 32 assists, 13 digs and two blocks to the non-conference victory.
