KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Goucher's Megan Smith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Long Beach Polytechnic) established new school and Landmark Conference records for kills in a match today. Her 35-kill performance helped the Gophers reach a fifth game against Moravian, but the Greyhounds were able to come out on top, 3-2.
Moravian was victorious in the first two sets, but head coach Michael Bossom's squad roared back only to suffer a 25-15, 25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 19-17 setback.
In a second conference match today, the Gophers were beaten by Susquehanna, 3-0. Set scores were 25-21, 30-28, 25-21.
The single-match record for kills at Goucher became Smith's last season when she knocked down 29 kills against Messiah. Until today, the most kills in a match in the short history of the Landmark Conference was 31, accomplished in 2007 by Catholic's Carey Anne Nassib against Gallaudet and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Jesselyn LaValley against Baruch.
In addition to her 35 kills, Smith was credited with 19 digs, two assists, one service ace and one block. Her attack percentage against the Greyhounds (9-10, 2-2 Landmark) was .315.
Claire Sauvage-Mar (New Delhi, India/American Embassy School) recorded 48 assists, 20 digs and three aces in the match.
For her encore, Smith supplied the Gophers (10-13, 1-4 Landmark) with team-high totals of 13 kills and 18 digs in the match with Susquehanna (18-7, 3-2 Landmark).
The Gophers committed 22 hitting errors and 12 service errors against the Crusders.
