MADISON, N.J. — The Landmark Conference today announced the names of the 32 student-athletes who make up the 2011 Fall Landmark All-Academic Team, which recognizes two male and two female athletes who have excelled athletically and academically from each of the eight Landmark institutions.
Goucher's four representatives on the fifth annual Fall Landmark All-Academic Team are Ashley Fan (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), a junior libero on the volleyball team, Hugh Geller (Devens, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School), a sophomore cross country runner, Micki Manheimer (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth), a senior goalie on the field hockey team, and David Spivey, Cockeysville, Md./The Park School), a sophomore goalkeeper on the men's soccer team.
Each school selected its four nominees, all of whom had to compete in any of the six sports for which the Landmark Conference conducts a championship in the fall. In addition, the nominees had to be a sophomore, junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Fan, a biology major with a 3.84 cumulative GPA, appeared in all 35 of this season's matches and led the Gophers in digs with 631. She set a new school record for most digs in a three-set match (33) against Catholic on Oct. 2, and is one of only four players in the Landmark Conference to average at least five digs per set in 2011.
Geller, who achieved a 3.69 cumulative GPA in his first two semesters at Goucher, placed 45th overall at the 2011 Landmark Conference Men's Cross Country Championships. He is a mathematics major, a participant in the school's International Scholars program and the recipient of a fine and performing arts scholarship for dance and a Global Citizen scholarship.
This Manheimer's third time on the Fall Landmark All-Academic Team as she was also an honoree in 2009 and 2010. She is a four-time letterwinner who played every minute of every game for Goucher this season and led the Landmark Conference in saves (129) and was co-leader in shutouts (4). The communications major with a 3.92 cumulative GPA is one of only three goalies in the history of the school's field hockey program to surpass 350 career saves.
Spivey, who also plays on Goucher's men's tennis team, started in goal for the Gophers in the first four games of the 2011 season, making 22 saves and recording one shutout. He is majoring in biology and biochemistry and has a minor in economics, plus he was the recipient of Goucher's Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award in spring 2011. After his first two semesters at the school, his cumulative GPA was 3.77.
