BRYN ATHYN, Pa. — Goucher picked up its first — and second — victories of the season today and came up just short of pulling off a sweep of the three matches it played.
The Gophers broke into the win column by defeating Bryn Mawr, 3-1, and followed that up with a 3-0 triumph over Bryn Athyn. The third match of the day was against St. Elizabeth and the Screaming Eagles pulled out a 3-2 victory over head coach Michael Bossom's squad.
Set scores in the final match were 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 12-25, 15-11.
Megan Chalk (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Tori Rain (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) both recorded 10 kills and Ashley Fan (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) was credited with a team-leading 14 digs in the four-set victory over the Owls (1-2). Set scores were 28-26, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20.
The Gophers picked up 10 of its points against the Lions (2-4) directly off their serves. Chalk served four aces, Rain three, Lydia Lou-Santelli (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) two and Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) one in the 25-16, 25-11, 25-18 victory.
Chalk led the Gophers (3-5) in kills (14) and digs (17) in the third match of the day against the Screaming Eagles (3-2).
In the three matches, Johnson totaled 107 assists. For the season, the freshman setter is averaging 7.41 assists per set.
