Gophers Sweep Griffins, Finish 2-2 at Hopkins Tournament

BALTIMORE – For the second-consecutive day, the Goucher volleyball team recovered to win its second match of the day after dropping the first at the Greg Giovannazzi Memorial Tournament.

The Gophers (6-3) cruised to a 25-22, 25-13, 25-10 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy after falling 16-25, 18-25, 13-25 to Lynchburg earlier in the morning.

The three-set triumph over the Griffons was Michael Bossom's 100th win as head coach at Goucher.

Megan Chalk had double-digit kills in both matches to continue her outstanding start to the season. The senior from Severna Park, who now has 10 or more kills in seven of Goucher's first nine matches, earned a spot on the All-Tournament team for her efforts.

Goucher struggled throughout its opener against the Hornets, with Chalk accounting for 11 of the team's 21 total kills in the match. Addie Lanzarotta followed with four kills (on a .500 attack percentage) while Chalk and Tori Rain had five digs each.

The Gophers rebounded quickly against Gwynedd-Mercy, pulling away from the Griffins after a close opening set.

Chalk led the way with 10 kills and 12 digs, with Lanzarotta and Hannah Kuehl each adding seven kills. Sarah Johnson had all 28 assists for Goucher, and she had three of the Gophers' 10 aces. Lanzarotta also had three, while Rain chipped in two. Johnson and Rain led the team with 13 digs apiece.

As a team, Goucher had a .268 attack percentage, its third-highest output of the season.

The Gophers concluded play at the tournament with a 2-2 record. Stevenson was the tournament champion after the Mustangs were the only team out of the seven participants to finish with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Goucher now has a week off before playing a pair of matches in Westminster next Saturday. The Gophers will square off against Muhlenberg at 2 p.m. before battling host McDaniel at 4 p.m.
