ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — Prior to taking over the Goucher volleyball program in 2006, Michael Bossom was one of the top high school coaches in Maryland, leading Centennial High School to eight state championships during his 12 seasons at the helm.
Bossom was recognized for those accomplishments tonight when he was inducted into the Howard County Women's Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Mt. Hebron High School. He was joined by fellow inductees Merri-Ellen James, Tatyana McFadden, Allison Valentino and Shannon Saltzman Webster.
The Eagles won 214 matches during Bossom's tenure, including five straight state titles from 1996-2000. He was twice named the All-Met Coach of the Year by both The (Baltimore) Sun and The Washington Post, and he coached over two dozen future collegiate players. Bossom remains affiliated with Centennial, serving as a physical education teacher at the school to go along with his position at Goucher.
Bossom joins a list of 68 people who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1997. He has continued to rack up wins during his eight seasons leading the Gophers, picking up his 100th victory against Gwynedd-Mercy on Sept. 7 last fall. Bossom is currently the second-winningest coach in the history of the Goucher volleyball program.
