HARRISONBURG, Va. — Goucher's Hannah Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional) was named to the all-tournament team at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational after supplying the Gophers with 22 kills in the two matches they played today.
The senior middle hitter was credited with a team-high total of 15 kills in a four-set match against Mary Baldwin, which Goucher won 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22), and seven more in the Gophers' final match of the tournament, a 3-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite.
Kelly Budge (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) also reached double figures in kills against the Fighting Squirrels (1-5) as she finished with 13, plus she had 16 digs, which ranked second on the team to the 24 that Meredith Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) compiled.
Goucher didn't take its first lead in the opening set until a run of seven points turned a five-point deficit into a 19-17 advantage. A service ace by Budge wrapped up the middle set.
A kill by Kuehl put the Gophers at match point in the fourth set, but their 24-20 lead eroded to 24-22 before they got the point they needed due to a ball-handling error.
Set scores in the Eastern Mennonite match were 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.
The tywo teams were separated by more than two points only one time in the first set, which concluded on a service ace by Eastern Mennonite's Maria Yoder. The Royals (3-2) clinched the middle set on a ball-handling error and the match on a kill by Erin Mays.
Up next for the Gophers (2-3) is a non-conference match against Dickinson on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Two days later, head coach Kelli Wilkinson's squad plays at home for the first time in 2015 when it welcomes Gallaudet to the Decker Sports & Recreation Center for a 7 p.m. match.
