WASHINGTON, D.C. — Goucher ended its 2015 season on a high note tonight with an impressive 3-0 triumph over Trinity in our nation's capital.
Set scores were 25-6, 25-8, 25-12.
Made up of Michelle Tweedie (Accra, Ghana/Lincoln Community School), Sarah Johnson (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Hannah Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H./Plymouth Regional), and Corinne Kahler (York, Pa./York Country Day), the "Fantastic Four", as head coach Kelli Wilkinson likes to call them, laid it all out on the line for the Gophers. The four seniors accounted for 29 of the team's 35 kills which helped Goucher finish with a .429 attack percentage — a new season-high.
With 26 assists on the night, Johnson ended her career with 3,015, eclipsing the 3,000 mark.
The Gophers (10-20) got it going early and didn't let up. Kahler earned four of the first 10 points, two of which came off service aces. Wilkinson's squad then broke the set open with a 9-0 run to take the 13-1 lead. The potent offense closed out the set with five of its final seven points coming off kills.
A kill by Kuehl, breaking a 4-4 tie, was all the Gophers needed in the second set as they rattled off eight straight points to take a commanding 13-4 lead. The Tigers (2-19) tallied four more points throughout but that wouldn't be enough as the Gophers closed the set out with three consecutive kills.
Trinity held its first lead, 3-1, of the night in the third set but Goucher didn't let that last. A 12-4 run put the visiting squad up, 13-7. The Tigers cut the Gophers' lead to five which was the closest they'd get as Rachel Kieffer (Granada Hills, Calif./Reseda) ended the set and match with yet another kill.
