BETHLEHEM, PA - After defeating Elizabethtown in their opening match, the Gophers suffered a 3-0 loss to the Moravian Greyhounds in the final match of the Landmark Conference opening weekend. Moravian defeated Goucher, 25-14, 25-23, 25-14.
‘Moravian won the serve and pass game,’ oberserved Head Coach Kait Kozak. ‘In sets one and three in particular, we were out of system a lot, and couldn’t get into an offensive rhythm. Moravian on the other hand took advantage of being in system by getting their Middle Hitters the ball.’
‘The second set was the deciding factor in the outcome of the match,’ says Head Coach Kait Kozak. The Gopher’s took control of the second set with a commanding lead at 22-17. ‘We were able to serve aggressively, and therefore make some digs. Our offense benefited as a result. The momentum shifted to our side, and the team took advantage of it to give us a 22-17 lead.’ Moravian then went on a 8 point run, and pulled out the set 25-23.
‘I know the team was disheartened. That was the first time our team was defeated after being up several points. We were unable to mentally recover in the moment, but in hindsight it was a great learning opportunity. Tight matches build character and mental toughness.’ says Kozak.
At the start of the third set both teams showed determination. However with the score tied at 5-5 the Greyhounds went on another big service run, which once again shifted the momentum. The Gophers were unable to battle back, and Moravian came out on top at 25-14. The Loss evens the Gophers' Landmark Conference recored at 1-1. Their next match is on Saturday, October 1st.
