BALTIMORE, MD. - Goucher’s volleyball team entered today’s second weekend of Landmark Conference play tied for third place in the league with a 1-1 match record. They knew they would have their hands full with Catholic University in today’s first match at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center, a team that was tied with Juniata for first place with a 2-0 record. Catholic entered the match with an overall record of 13-5. In all three sets the Gophers hung in there early on in each match by forging ties at 7-7, 7-7 and 6-6, but they were unable to overcome Cardinal runs, and a serious height disadvantage, that resulted in a 3-0 match loss. The set scores were 25-15, 25-10, and 25-9.
In the second match Goucher faced the University of Scranton, a team that had played the top two teams in the Landmark Conference the weekend before and came into today’s match with a 0-2 league record, 9-11 overall. After losing to Catholic in the second match played here today, 25-20, 25-14, 22-25 and 25-20, Scranton dropped to 0-3 in conference play. The Gophers started strong in the first set in back and forth action, tying the set at 17 all. The closest the Gophers would close after Scranton surged ahead was at 24-22. A kill by Kristen Kirwan sealed the win for Scranton by a 25-22 score. Goucher tied the second set at 17 also but could not get over the hump, losing 25-20. In the third set the Gophers were the victim of a ten point Scranton run and could never recover, losing the set 25-15, and the match 3-0. The two losses drop the Gophers record on the season to 2-11, and 1-3 in the Landmark Conference.
