BALTIMORE, MD. - Wesley College entered today's volleyball match with a 4-3 record and they jumped out to a big lead in all three sets to win the match, 3-0. With the loss the Gophers fall to 1-7 on the season.
It was all about momentum swinging back and forth during all three sets today, In the first set the Gophers got behind 7-3 but scored four straight points to tie the match at seven and then again at 10. After back and forth play the Gophers fell behind once again at 21-13 before scoring five straight points. From that point forward it was nip and tuck until the score was tied at 24-24. Wesley maintained control of the serve after each team earned a side out to win the first set 27-25.
The same pattern continued in set two and three with the Gophers falling behind12-3 in set two and 12-5 in set three. But, the Gophers defense stiffened and they passed and hit with more efficiency allowing them to get back into both sets. After climbing back to 23-17 in the second set, the Wolverines prevailed by a 25-17 score. In the third set the Gophers rode a six straight point run to trail 21-17. However, 23-18 was the closest the Gophers would get as they lost the third set 25-18.
First-year coach Kait Kozak saw positives coming from the team's performance: "In all three sets were down, but we made runs, and closed the gap on a solid team from Wesley. I see progress and am encouraged by that."
The Gophers return to action in the friendly confines of the Decker Sports and Recreation Center when they host McDaniel College on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 pm.
