FROSTBURG, MD. -The Goucher Gophers dropped a pair of non-conference matches to the Seahawks of the College of St. Marys and the Bobcats of Frostburg State University on Saturday, Oct. 22. The match results were both in three sets (SMU: 25-10, 25-16, 25-15 and FSU: 25-11, 25-16, 25-22).
In the first set of the day, the Seahawks jumped out to an impressive 16-3 advantage, and the Gophers never dug themselves out of that hole. In the second set, the Seahawks once again opened up with a tough 13-5 lead. ‘The Seahawks were a very scrappy team. Our hitters had to make big adjustments to find success, and that was hard to do,’ Goucher’s Head Coach, Kait Kozak, observed. The Seahawks maintained control in every aspect of the game to finish off the set 26-16. In the final set of the match, The Gophers took a 5-1 lead until the Seahawks put together a 7-2 run to retake the upper hand. The Gophers and Seahawks went back and forth, until the Seahawks went on a late service run to close out the match
The Gophers have a busy final week of the season as they travel to Lancaster Bible on Tuesday, October 25th, to the College of Notre Dame of Maryland on Thursday, October 27th, and then to Penn State-Abington on Saturday, October 29th for a tri-match with Bryn Mawr College.
