Coss Leads Gophers in Kills Against Shorewomen

TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College women's volleyball team (0-4, Landmark 0-0) battled Washington College (5-0, CAC 0-0) to a 3-0 loss in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.
The Gophers went down in straight sets in their home opener, despite putting up a tough fight in the second set. Goucher lost 25-13, 25-18 and 25-13 to Washington.
The Goucher offense showed glimpses of excellence throughout the match with powerful kills from sophomore Sarah Weeden (Monmouth Junction, N.J.), Greta Coss (Bowie, Md.) and Bianca Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.). Coss led the team with six kills in her first match in the Decker SRC. Weeden and Brown finished with four and three kills, respectively.
The Shorewomen were led by Kaitlyn Marino with 10 kills.
Multiple Gophers chipped in on defense with three posting six digs in the match. First-year Katie Hessenius (Aldie, Va.), sophomore Olivia Rhodes (St. Charles, Mizz.) and Weeden were in to pop the ball up to their teammates. Coss aided with four digs while Washington College was anchored by Abby Smith with eight.
Weeden logged four service aces on the night – a match high. Marino compiled three for the Shorewomen while Rhodes claimed the other ace for Goucher.
Bianca Brown collected one solo block and a block assist with first-year teammate Simone Brown (Pelham, N.Y.).
Rhodes was the only Gopher to claim an assist on the evening, posting 14 on the night.
The Gophers return to the court on Friday, September 8th at 4 p.m. when they take on Alvernia at McDaniel College.
