Volleyball Takes Alvernia Five Sets; Falls 3-2

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Goucher College volleyball team (0-5, Landmark 0-0) dropped its match against Alvernia University in five sets on Friday evening.
The Gophers fell following a five-set match on Friday. Goucher dropped the first set, 17-25, before rebounding to take the second game, 25-21. Alvernia took two-of-three down the stretch to seal the win.
First-year Greta Coss (Bowie, Md.) led the Gophers in the match with 14 kills. She was followed by sophomore Sarah Weeden (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) and first-year Bianca Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) with 11 and nine kills, respectively. The Golden Wolves were paced by Kristin Sipling with 26 total kills in the match.
First-year Katie Hessenius (Aldie, Va.) led the Gophers on defense with 15 digs. Weeden was next with eight digs while Coss and sophomore Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala.) followed with seven digs each.
Sophomore Olivia Rhodes (St. Charles, Mizz.) dished the ball around, leading the team with 25 assists. She went on to deal out three service aces to join Estes with a team-high in the match. Weeden was close behind with two.
The Gophers were outpaced in hitting percentage (.336 to .144), kills (60-44), and assists (58-36), but tied the Golden Wolves in digs, 53-53.
Goucher bounces back tomorrow to take on St. Mary's (Md.) at 10 a.m. and McDaniel at 12 p.m. in Westminster.
