Gophers Take Home Five-Set Match at Immaculata
The Goucher College women’s volleyball team won its third match of the season on Tuesday evening in Immaculata, Pa., 3-2.
TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College women's volleyball team won its third match of the season on Tuesday evening in Immaculata, Pa., 3-2.
Goucher and Immaculata battled in a back-and-forth affair. Goucher took home the match in five sets: 21-25, 27-25, 25-18, 14-25, 15-11.
The Gophers were led by the duo of sophomore Sarah Weeden (Monmouth, N.J.) and first-year Greta Coss (Bowie, Md.) with 18 kills, each. The mark is a career-high for Coss. Weeden was only 9 kills short of her career-high.
Sophomore Olivia Rhodes (St. Charles, Mizz.) eclipsed a career-high with 45 assists in the match. Her previous career-high was 44 against Immaculata one year ago. She also added a career-high 17 digs.
Sophomore Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala.) and first-year Katie Hessenius (Aldie, Va.) led the Gophers on defense with 21 digs, each, in the match. Hessenius surpassed her career-high (20) while Estes fell one dig short of her previous milestone set against Immaculata in 2016.
The Gophers struggled to get their offense going in the first game with a -0.020 hitting percentage but rebounded in the second set with a 0.406 hitting percentage. Despite dropping the first set, Goucher held the Mighty Macs off, 27-25, to earn their first set of the evening.
The Gophers then took the lead in the third set, out-hitting Immaculata, 0.200-0.000. However, the Mighty Macs did not go away easy, stealing the fourth set, 14-25 to stay alive. Finally, the Gophers sealed their first five-set win of the 2017 season, 15-11.
Goucher is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Marymount University to take on Marymount and Shenandoah in tri-match play.
