Blue Jays Sweep Gophers in Final Match
The Elizabethtown Blue Jays swept the Goucher College volleyball team 3 sets to 0 in the second Landmark Conference match of the day for both teams and the final match of the year for the Gophers.
TOWSON, Md. - The Elizabethtown Blue Jays swept the Goucher College volleyball team 3 sets to 0 in the second Landmark Conference match of the day for both teams and the final match of the year for the Gophers.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 7-1 score in the first set and worked steadily to maintain that lead, advancing to 17-12 and eventually winning the set 25-17 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the 2nd set, Elizabethtown pulled ahead early but the Gophers closed to within 2 at 11-9. From that point on the Blue Jays took control and did not relinquish the lead as they took the 2nd set 25-18 to go up 2 sets to 0 in the match.
The 3rd set saw more of the same as Elizabethtown took an early lead and Goucher fought back again to get within 2 at 11-9. After that the Blue Jays refused to let Goucher get closer than 3 points as they won the set 25-20, taking the match by 3 sets to 0.
Sarah Weeden (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) led the way for the Gophers with 12 kills and Greta Coss (Bowie, Md. / Bowie) chipped in with 10 kills for the match. Olivia Rhodes (St. Charles, Mo.) had 35 of the 38 team assists. Weeden also led the team with 11 digs, followed closely by Coss with 9 and Rhodes with 7.
