Goucher Women's Volleyball Wins Second In A Row To Open Season With Best Start Since 2006
BALTIMORE, Md. – Eden Adcock (Stratford, N.J./Sterling Regional) accounted for 10 points in the match to propel Goucher College past Penn State Brandywine 3-0 and help the Gophers off to their best start since 2006 in non-conference women's volleyball action on Saturday. Goucher won the three sets 25-14, 25-9 and 25-16.
Adcock registered seven kills in her collegiate debut after not playing in Friday night's 3-1 season-opening win against Notre Dame.
For the second-straight match, Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) paced the team in kills with eight after registering 10 kills in the victory against the Gators. The freshman added five digs on the afternoon.
Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) and Izzy Kolb (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) each had 10 assists while Nicole Kovach paced the team with seven digs.
"Today's match was a very good team win," said head coach Kathy Frankowski. "We couldn't have asked for a better opening weekend to grow further as a team and see how much farther we can go together. The energy is great and we're eager to keep it going forward."
In the first set with Goucher holding a 6-4 lead, the Gophers went on a 16-5 run to take a 22-9 advantage. Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) started the run with a kill and then had two aces while Chapman posted four kills and DeJaeger chipped in two aces. The Lions cut the margin to 23-14, but a service error and a ball handling error gave the hosts the first set, 25-14.
It was a 22-7 run for the Gophers in the second set that helped the squad take a two-sets advantage. Vendela Lundren (Columbia, Md./Howard) and DeJaeger keyed the run by posting points on 15 services. Lundgren served the team to a 6-0 run that included one ace while DeJaeger closed out the set with the final nine points that included a pair of aces for the 25-9 second set.
For the first portion of the third set it resembled the match against Notre Dame with Penn State Brandywine taking the lead a few times, but with the score tied at 9, Goucher ended the Lions roar with a 16-7 run to close out the match. Chapman had three kills in the spurt while Nicole Blount (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) and Trinity Collier (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) closed the match with a block to close out the match at 25-14.
With the wins in its first two matches, the squad is off to its best start since joining the Landmark Conference. Goucher started the 2006 season with six-consecutive wins in the last season of the Capital Athletic Conference.
The Gophers return to action on Wednesday to wrap up the three-game homestand to start the season against Shenandoah. Game time is 7 p.m.
