ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Goucher College took to the road for the first time in its women's volleyball season and dropped its first two matches of the season. The Gophers fell 3-1 to both Pratt University and Cedar Crest College in non-conference action on Saturday.
Emily Sorrells (Annapolis, Md./South River) registered 18 kills on the afternoon including a season-high 11 kills against Cedar Crest while Bianca Brown (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick Township) added season-best 10 kills against Cedar Crest. Sorrells reached double figures in kills for the third time in career while Brown recorded double digits for the fourth time in her career. Rachel Chapman registered eight kills against Pratt and leads the team with 43 kills on the year.
Cat Hartley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) tallied 13 digs against Pratt and 20 digs against Cedar Crest. The sophomore has posted 10 or more digs four times this season and 22 times in her career while reach the 20-digs plateau for the second time in 2019 and nine times in her career. Virginia Estes (Homewood, Ala./Homewood) almost had double-digit digs in both games, finishing with nine digs and Pratt and 10 digs against Cedar Crest. She reached double figures for the second time this season and 22 times in her four seasons.
Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn./Brien McMahon) registered seven assists in the first match and 33 assists in the second match of the afternoon. The sophomore has posted double figures in assists in 33 of the 35 contests in her career and also has 30 or more assists 13 times in her career.
Kaya Melchor (Santa Fe, N.M./Monte del Sol Charter) narrowly had a double-double against Cedar Crest, finishing with 11 kills and nine digs in the loss.
Goucher won the opening set 25-23 against Pratt and then lost the next three sets 25-10, 25-20 and 25-18. The Gophers used a 4-0 run in the first set to erase a 21-19 deficit and take a 23-21 lead. Sorrells posted a kill and DeJaeger an ace while two attack errors accounted for the other two points. With Goucher holding a 24-23 lead, a Pratt service error handed the Gophers the opening set.
After dropping the first two sets by the score of 25-20, Goucher won the third set 25-21. In the third set with the set tied at 8, the Gophers used an 12-4 run to take a 20-12 advantage. The Baltimore program posted three aces in the run from Estes, Hartley and Melchor while Sorrells, Melchor and Brown each had a kill. The squad won the third set 25-21 after a Brown kill.
The fourth set was closely contested and the Gophers had an 18-15 edge. Cedar Crest would grab a 23-21 lead before Melchor and Brown each registered kills to tie the set at 23. An attack error and a kill would end the set and the match with a score of 25-23.
Goucher returns to action on Thursday at home against McDaniel. Match time is 6 p.m.
