ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Goucher College dropped a pair of matches in the Landmark Conference women's volleyball opening weekend on Saturday. The Gophers lost in straight sets to Susquehanna University and 3-1 to Moravian College.
Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) paced the Gophers with 14 kills and 24 digs including narrowly missing a double-double against Moravian after posting nine kills and 19 digs. She has notched at least nine kills seven times this season and 16 times in her career. The sophomore has double figures in digs six times on the year and nine times in her career.
Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) recorded 15 kills on the day including 11 kills against the Greyhounds. Cat Hartley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) registered 23 digs on the day while Linnea Prudell (York, Pa./Central York) had 27 assists and Vendela Lundgren (Columbia, Md./Howard) added 25 assists.
Goucher took the first set against Moravian thanks to a 6-1 run to end the opening set. Chapman, Melchor and Nicole Blount (Fayetteville, Ga./Fayette County) each tallied a kill and Nicole Kovach (New York, N.Y./Quest to Learn) had a service ace in the run.
The Gophers held a 20-19 lead after a Melchor kill, but the Greyhounds closed the set on a 6-1 run to even the match at a set apiece.
The third set came down to the end just like the first two sets. With the score tied at 22, Moravian rolled off the three of the final four points for a 25-23 lead.
The final set did not have the suspense that first three had after the Greyhounds used an 9-1 run to erase a 13-12 deficit en route to a 25-19 fourth set win and the match victory.
Susquehanna won in straight sets 25-12, 25-20 and 25-14. In the second set with the score tied at 18, the Riverhawks used a 7-2 run to earn a two set lead and then tied at 12 in the third set Susquehanna closed the match on a 13-2 run.
Goucher returns to action on Wednesday at home against Juniata. Match time is 7 p.m.
