Gophers Blanked by Bridgewater on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - Visiting Bridgewater College pulled out a tough opening set victory then cruised in the next two sets as it downed Goucher College 3-0 in non-conference women's volleyball on Goucher's Senior Day at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.  Set scores were 26-24, 25-12, 25-11.

First Set

  • Goucher (5-12) scored three straight points to take a 15-12 lead, with a Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) kill and an Alex Coffin (Plymouth, Mass. / Plymouth North) service ace as part of the run.
  • Four straight points by the Gophers gave them a 23-18 lead following another Melchor kill.
  • Bridgewater (9-7) scored four straight points to pull within 23-22 before an Eagle attack error had the Gophers serving for set point.
  • The guests scored the final three points to take the set, taking advantage of three Goucher errors.

Second Set

  • Bridgewater used an early 7-0 run to build an 11-3 lead following back-to-back kills.
  • The Gophers used a 7-1 run that included two kills and a pair of blocks late in the set to get within 23-12.
  • The Eagles scored the final two points to take a 2-0 lead.

Third Set

  • The guests never trailed in the final set, scoring the first five points.
  • Bridgewater hit .231 in the final set and limited the Gophers to -.143 hitting.

Numbers and. Notes

  • Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y. / Churchville Chili) led the Gophers with seven kills.
  • Melchor notched five kills and 13 digs.
  • Neli La Court Ruiz (York, Pa. / Northeastern) notched 10 digs.
  • Nicole Kovach (New York, N.Y./Quest to Learn) handed out 15 assists and posted nine digs.
  • Eden Adcock (Stratford, N.J. / Sterling Regional) recorded three block assists.
  • Prior to the match, the Gophers honored seniors Melchor, Coffin, Ruiz and Grace Howl (Harwood, Md. / Southern).

What's Next

  • Goucher plays its final home match of the season Wednesday night hosting Susquehanna in a 7 pm Landmark Conference contest at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
