MADISON, N.J. - The Goucher College women's volleyball team split a pair of Landmark Conference matches to close out the 2021 season Saturday.  The Gophers pulled out a 3-2 win over Moravian College, then were swept by host Drew 3-0 in the nightcap.

First Match

  • Set scores were 25-20, 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 15-7.
  • Goucher (6-18, 1-6 Landmark) was paced by Kaya Melchor's (Mililani, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) 18 kills and 22 digs.
  • Rachel Chapman (Rochester, N.Y. / Churchville Chili) posted 15 kills and seven digs.
  • Eden Adcock (Stratford, N.J. / Sterling Regional) and Elizabeth Bobo (Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley) chipped in with six kills apiece, with Bobo adding five blocks (two solo).
  • Neli La Court Ruiz (York, Pa. / Northeastern) racked up 49 digs.
  • Nicole Kovach (New York, N.Y. / Quest to Learn) handed out 41 assists, posted 22 digs and had five service aces.
  • Necole Stravino (Quezon City, Philippines / Nadua (Va,)) added 17 digs.
  • Moravian (11-16, 0-6) led 22-21 in the second set before Amel Lightfoot (Columbia, Md. / Oakland Mills) kicked off a set-clinching 4-0 run with a kill.
  • The fourth set was tied 18-18 before the Greyhounds closed on a 7-0 run.
  • Goucher bounced back with the first four points of the fifth set capped by a Chapman kill.  The run also featured two Kovach service aces.
  • The Gophers extended their lead to 9-2 and a Chapman kill closed out the match.
  • Goucher hit .136 for the match while the Greyhounds hit .132.

Second Match

  • Set scores were 25-15, 25-13, 25-17.
  • Melchor had a team-high seven kills for the Gophers and also recorded nine digs.
  • Ruiz posted 12 digs.
  • Kovach tallied 18 assists and seven digs, while Stravino also registered seven digs.
  • Drew (19-9, 2-5) hit .255 for the match.

Numbers and. Notes

  • Ruiz's 49 digs are the most in Division III in a five-set match this season.  The previous high was 48 held by two players.
  • Her 49 digs are also one shy of the program record of 50 set by Karen Levi in 1994.
  • Goucher's win over Moravian was its first conference victory since 2016.
  • Melchor led the Gophers in kills for the fourth and fifth time this season.
