Gophers Battle Mount Aloysius

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Goucher College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Mount Aloysius College Friday evening to open the McDaniel Tournament at the Gill Center. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-13.
- Goucher (0-3) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opening set following a Sarah Ferguson kill.
- The Mounties (1-5) used a 9-3 run to take a 10-9 lead.
- The Gophers tied the set 10-10 on a Madison Amaya kill before Mount Aloysius scored the next four points to build a 14-10 lead.
- A 6-2 Goucher spurt capped by a block by Kailee Turner and Lucy Hendricks tied the frame 16-16.
- The set was tied four more times, the last at 21-21 on an Amel Lightfoot kill.
- The Mounties closed out the set with four straight points to take the opening set.
- Goucher jumped out to an early 8-3 lead.
- The Mounties used a 7-1 surge to take a 10-9 lead.
- The Gophers scored three of the next four points to go up 12-11.
- Goucher started to pull away and a Turner service ace put it up 19-16.
- Mount Aloysius scored the next three points before an Imani Ward kill put the Gophers back in front, 20-19.
- With the set tied 21-21, the Mounties scored the next three points to go up 24-21.
- A Lightfoot kill and a Nicole Kovach service ace cut the lead to 24-23, before MAC closed out the set with a kill.
- After the Mounties took a 7-2 lead, the Gophers scored the next three to make it 7-5.
- Goucher trailed 11-8 following a Ward kill.
- Mount Aloysius pulled away, using a 10-2 run to go up 21-10.
- Turner led the Gophers with eight kills, while Ward and Amaya finished with six and five, respectively.
- Amaya also racked up 23 assists and nine digs.
- Athena Savick notched a team-best 18 digs and also had three service aces. Turner also had three aces.
- The Mounties hit .258 for the match, while Goucher hit .101 on the evening.
- The two teams were meeting for the first time since 2007.
- Goucher is in action twice at McDaniel on Saturday, taking on the host Green Terror at 10 am and SUNY Canton at 2 pm.
- The Gophers' home opener is slated for Friday, September 22 when Alvernia visits the Decker Sports and Recreation Center for a 6 pm match.
