Gophers Split at McDaniel, Earn First Win of Season

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Goucher College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the McDaniel College Tournament at the Gill Center on Saturday.  The Gophers fell to the host Green Terror 3-0 before pulling out a 3-2 win over SUNY Canton in the nightcap.

First Match

  • Set scores were 25-11, 25-21, 25-19.
  • Goucher (1-4) led 5-2 early in the second set and was down 21-20 before the Green Terror (4-1) closed on a 4-1 run.
  • In the third, the Gophers forged a 15-15 tie and trailed 19-18 before McDaniel closed with six of the final seven points of the match.
  • Kailee Turner and Imani Ward led the Gophers with eight kills apiece.
  • Nicole Kovach racked up 13 digs, while Madison Amaya recorded 16 assists.
  • McDaniel hit .284 as a team while the Gophers hit .106.

Second Match

  • Set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 15-8.
  • In the second set, Goucher reeled off nine straight points capped by a Turner kill to build a 21-12 lead.
  • SUNY Canton (1-6) countered with a 7-1 spurt to pull within three, 22-19.
  • A Sarah Ferguson kill, a Riley Kocell service ace and a Turner kill closed out the set.
  • Goucher never trailed in the third set and jumped out to an 11-6 lead following a Kovach service ace.
  • In the fourth, the Gophers turned an 18-13 deficit into a 20-18 lead, but the Roos countered with a 7-1 run to force the fifth.
  • Tied 5-5 in the fifth, Goucher scored six straight points capped by an Amel Lightfoot kill to go up 11-5.
  • A Lightfoot service ace closed out the match.
  • Turner hit .318 and racked up 21 kills and added six digs.
  • Ward notched eight kills, while Lightfoot and Lucy Hendricks finished with seven apiece.
  • Kovach posted 11 digs, while Athena Savick added nine.
  • Amaya handed out a career-best 39 assists.
  • Lightfoot had six of Goucher's 15 service aces.
  • Goucher hit a season-best .188 while the Roos hit .200

Numbers and. Notes

  • Turner's 21 kills against SUNY Canton are a career high.
  • Goucher's .188 hitting percentage against the Roos was its best since hitting .214 in a win over Penn State York on October 14 of last season.
