Alvernia Sweeps Gophers in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Visiting Alvernia University swept Goucher College in non-conference women's volleyball 3-0 Friday evening at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21, 25-16.
- Goucher (2-8) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set following a kill by Madison Amaya.
- Trailing 8-5 after a kill by Kailee Turner, the Golden Wolves (6-3) scored eight straight points to take a 13-8 lead.
- The Gophers cut the lead to four twice but Alvernia gradually pulled away.
- After three ties early, Alvernia used a 5-2 spurt to take a 10-6 lead.
- The guests pushed their lead to 18-10 before a 6-1 Goucher run capped by back-to-back Nicole Kovach service aces cut AU's lead to three, 19-16.
- Athena Savick's service ace pulled the Gophers within two, 22-20.
- Alvernia closed out the set with three of the final four points.
- Alvernia jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage.
- A Turner kill pulled Goucher within 8-5.
- Down 12-6, three straight Gopher points including kills by Turner and Imani Ward cut the Golden Wolves' advantage in half, 12-9.
- The visitors responded with six of the next seven points to go up 18-10.
- Goucher got within 23-16 before Alvernia scored the final two points of the night.
- Turner paced the Gophers with 10 kills while also recording seven digs.
- Olivia DeBiasio added five kills.
- Amaya handed out 20 assists and posted nine digs.
- Kovach had a team-high 15 digs.
- Goucher hit .052 for the match while Alvernia hit at a .243 clip.
- Goucher hosts Widener and Neumann in a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 11 am at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
- The Gophers take on the Pride at 11 am and the Knights at 3 pm.
