Gophers Downed by Cardinals

TOWSON, Md. - Visiting Catholic University swept a Landmark Conference women's volleyball match from Goucher College 3-0 Tuesday evening at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. Set scores were 25-17, 25-9, 25-15.
- Goucher (3-17, 0-6 Landmark) jumped out to a 4-0 lead following a Nicole Kovach service ace.
- Trailing 5-3, Catholic (18-8, 4-2) reeled off seven straight points to take a 10-5 lead.
- The Gophers cut the lead to three three times, the last at 18-15.
- After an Amel Lightfoot block made it 22-17, the Cardinals scored the final three times to close out the set.
- Catholic got off to a fast start, opening an 11-1 lead.
- Goucher reeled off four straight points with a block by Emma Taylor and Dakota Hawkins making it 16-7.
- The Cardinals scored nine of the final 11 points of the set.
- There were three ties in the early going, with an Olivia DeBiasio kill tying the set 5-5.
- Leading 7-6, the Cardinals reeled off nine straight points.
- Goucher chipped away with a 7-4 spurt making it 23-15 before the guests had the final two points of the evening.
- DeBiasio had a team-high five kills.
- Nicole Kovach and Riley Kocell each had 10 digs, with Kovach now 18 away from 1,000 for her career.
- Athena Savick added eight digs.
- Lightfoot, Hawkins and Taylor each finished with three blocks.
- Prior to the game a moment of silence was held for Eliza Grover, a Goucher pre-med student who had been a part of the volleyball program, who lost her life on October 7.
- Goucher travels to defending national champion on Juniata Friday night for a 7 pm Landmark Conference contest.
- The last Gopher home match is Saturday, November 4, as they host Rutgers Camden at 11:30 am at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
