La PLUME, Pa. - The Goucher College women's volleyball team opened its season with a pair of setbacks in a tri-match hosted by Keystone College on Saturday at the Gambal Athletic Center. The Gophers dropped 3-0 decisions to Rutgers-Newark and the host Giants.
- Set scores were 25-16, 25-22, 25-17.
- Goucher (0-2) led 17-16 in the second set before the Scarlet Raiders (1-1) used a 6-1 run to go up 22-18.
- The Gophers scored four straight capped by a Alex Dzhygit kill to tie the set 22-22 before Rutgers-Newark scored the final three points.
- First year Maria Basantes led the Gophers with seven kills, while Dakota Hawkins added six on .625 hitting.
- Athena Savick racked up 20 digs, with Basantes adding 10.
- Vivian Huddleston notched 15 assists.
- Set scores were 25-12, 25-18, 25-16.
- Emma Taylor had a team-high five kills in the nightcap.
- Savick recorded 12 digs, with Imani Ward posting 10.
- Basantes and Olivia DeBiasio each added seven digs.
- Huddleston and DeBiasio finished with eight and seven assists, respectively.
- Goucher returns to action Tuesday evening when it faces Notre Dame (Md.) on the road at 7 pm.
- The Gophers' home opener is set for next Saturday, September 7, as they host a tri-match against Penn State Harrisburg and SUNY-Canton beginning at 11 am at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center.
