EAST MANCHESTER TWP., Pa. — Goucher not only produced the individual champion at today's Coach Achtzehn Classic, but head coach John Caslin's Gophers also beat out 10 other squads for the team title.
The first to cross the finish line in today's 6,000-meter race at John C. Rudy County Park was Goucher's Katherine Currier (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaGuardia). The junior's winning time was 23:56.56, which is the 23rd-fastest all-time in the history of the school's women's cross country program for that distance.
The Gophers didn't have to wait long for their second runner to come in: Melissa Teeple from Marymount (24:06.10) claimed second place, but freshman June Chiango (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) followed in 24:13.11, good for the No. 3 position. Her time now stands as the 31st-fastest for a 6K by a Goucher female.
Goucher's Katelynn Zidanic (York, Pa./Central York) posted a time of 25:46.47 to finish in 13th place.
The final two runners that helped determine the team score for the Gophers were Zoe Malkin (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) and Kathryn Walker (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh). Malkin (26:31.27) placed 27th overall, two spots ahead of Walker (26:35.38).
Goucher's team score of 70 points was 11 points better than York, the runner-up with 81 points. Marymount was third with 94 points, Franklin & Marshall fourth with 100 and St. Mary's (Md.) fifth with 102.
A total of 108 runners finished the race.
