TOWSON, Md. — Goucher finished in second place, just two points behind Stevenson, at the Goucher Cross Country Classic, which was conducted today.
The first runner to cross the finish line was Stevenson's Kelly Winklbauer, but the Gophers had three runners come in before the Mustangs No. 2 runner completed the 6,000-meter race: Emily League (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) in fifth place (26:31.69), Soliana Goldrich (Austin, Texas/Beachwood) in seventh place (26:37.46) and Anna Sandacz (Jessup, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) in eighth (26:45.52).
Winklbauer's winning time was 24:37.33.
Hannah Brogan (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), Goucher's No. 4 runner, beat out the No. 4 runner from Stevenson for 11th place by 1.8 seconds as she was clocked at 27:22.95.
"We had some outstanding performances today," head coach John Caslin commented after the meet. "Having three women in the top 10 was huge, but the key was Hannah Brogan finishing 11th. Those four working within 51 seconds allowed us to make a run at the team title."
Where the No. 5 runners finished created a three-point swing in the team scoring and allowed the Mustangs to take the crown with 48 points. Jonelle Palmer (Nashville, Tenn./Hume Fogg Academic Magnet) placed 19th overall (29:51.09), giving the Gophers a final team score of 50 points.
Hood placed third with 54 points.
The Gophers will compete next Saturday at the St. Joseph's (L.I.) Invitational in Kings Park, N.Y.
