FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Goucher captured its third IHSA
Zone IV Region I title in the past five years today by finishing as
the reserve champion at the region's final riding show of the
season.
Even though Mary Washington finished ahead of director Patte
Zumbrun's program at today's show by earning 38 points, the 34
points awarded to Goucher was enough to hang on to first place in
the region standings. Going into the show, Goucher led Mary
Washington by 15 points, 244-225.
Placing third behind Goucher (278) and Mary Washington (263) was
Maryland with 179 points.
Goucher's Brittany Martin (Ocean City, MD/Worcester
Prep) finished the IHSA season as the region's reserve
high point rider, runner-up to Mary Washington's Jessica Van
Brocklin. Martin was awarded second place today in open equitation
on the flat.
There were two first-place performances by Goucher riders today: by
Allison Wherley (Glen Rock, PA/Susquehannock) in
open fences and by Nina Sysko (Lewiston,
ME/Lewiston) in walk-trot. Sarah Pandolfini (New
York, NY/Buxton) placed second in novice flat.
Goucher captured its first IHSA Zone IV Region I crown in 2003.
After finishing second in 2004, Zumbrun's program regained the
region championship in 2005.
