FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Two more Goucher riders qualified to compete at the regional championships in April with their performances at today's IHSA Zone IV Region I show.
Justine Wilson (Westminster, MD/Westminster) earned her spot at regionals by placing first in novice equitation on the flat. Brittany Martin (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep), who previously qualified in open equitation over fences, did so today by garnering second-place honors in open flat.
Martin also maintained her lead in the Zone IV Region I high point rider standings, but two of her closest pursuers made up some ground on her. Martin collected five points today, raising her season total to 60. Jessica Van Brocklin from Mary Washington and Brittany Yates from Richmond picked up 14 and 10 points, respectively, today. Van Brocklin now trails Martin by six points and Yates is only five back.
In addition to Wilson, three other Goucher riders were awarded first place today: Sarah Pandolfini (New York, NY/Buckston) and Emily Shelley (Glyndon, MD) in intermediate flat, and Courtney Levine (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto) in novice flat.
Claire McMahon (Kings Point, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) took second in intermediate fences and Kelly Usher (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) placed second in novice flat.
Heading into the show, Goucher was in first place in the Zone IV Region I standings, but director Patte Zumbrun's riders were overtaken today by Mary Washington. Mary Washingon secured 45 points, William & Mary was second with 31 and Goucher third with 25. Adding in today's point totals, Mary Washington is now in first with 232 points; Goucher is 12 points behind in second place.
