FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Goucher's Brittany Martin (Ocean
City, MD/Worcester Prep) held on to first place in the
high point rider standings at today's IHSA Zone IV Region I show
and will represent the region in the Cacchione Cup in May.
Martin was awarded first place in open equitation on the flat and third place in open equation over fences, earning 11 points to conclude the season with a total of 71 points. Jessica Van Brocklin from Mary Washington started the day in third place with 54 points, but picked up 14 points today to move into second and finish just three points behind Martin.
Points earned by riders competing in the open division determine the high point rider standings. The high point riders from every region advance to the Cacchione Cup Championship held annually at the IHSA National Horse Show, which this year takes place in Los Angeles from May 8-11.
The only other first-place performance by a Goucher rider at today's show was by Kelly Usher (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) in novice fences, but several Goucher riders were awarded second place: Emily Shelley (Glyndon, MD) and Justine Wilson (Westminster, MD/Westminster) in intermediate flat, Courtney Levine (Miami, FL/Miami Palmetto) and Sarah Ashby (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) in novice flat, Valerie Wiseman (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) in advanced walk-trot-canter and Shauntae Robinson (Laurel, MD/Reservoir) in walk-trot.
Goucher finished second, 22 points behind Mary Washington, in the final IHSA Zone IV Region I standings. Mary Washington, which picked up 47 points today, ended with a total of 279 points; Goucher earned 37 points today to finish at 257.
