TOWSON, Md. - As a result of their performances today at the IHSA Zone IV Region I Championships, five riders from Goucher qualified to compete at the Zone IV Championships on April 13 in Lynchburg, Va.
One additional rider from director Patte Zumbrun's program had her spot at zones secured even before today, giving Goucher a total of eight rides by six individuals.
In order to advance to zones, a rider needed to place first, second or third at the regional meet, which was conducted on the Goucher College campus.
Brittany Martin (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep), who was the region's high point rider for 2007-08, qualified for zones in both classes of the open division as she placed second in open equitation over fences and open equitation on the flat.
Three of the Goucher riders who qualified for zones today did so as the top performer in Region I: Julie Fink (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest School) in intermediate flat, Emily Berkowitz (Bryn Mawr, PA/Harriton) in novice fences and Sarah Ashby (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) in advanced walk-trot-canter.
Sarah Pandolfini (New York, NY/Buckston) and Berkowitz placed 2-3, respectively, behind Tiffany Batterton from Mary Washington in novice flat.
Because she was one of only three riders from throughout Region I to qualify for today's competition in walk-trot, Nina Sysko (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) automatically moves on to zones.
The zone qualifiers from Region I will compete against riders from the other two regions in Zone IV. Any rider who places first or second in his or her class at zones will earn a spot to perform at the IHSA National Horse Show in Los Angeles in May.
