LAURINBURG, N.C. - Goucher made a solid showing in its first competition of the 2007-08 season, placing seventh in a strong field of 15 teams at the Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic.
Goucher's Brittany Martin (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) distinguished herself in the medal class, which drew a total of 30 competitors. The class begins with a flat phase and the top 14 are called back to jump. Martin was among the riders brought back to jump and finished in fourth place overall.
Two Goucher riders were awarded second place in their class - Sarah Pandolfini (New York, NY/Buckston) in novice equitation on the flat and Sarah Ashby (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) in advanced walk-trot-canter. In addition, Cady Klimas (Miami, FL/Palmer Trinity) and Claire McMahon (King Point, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) were awarded three-place performances in open fences and intermediate fences, respectively.
The team title of this prestigious event went to Mt. Holyoke with 39 points. Virginia Intermont finished second with 34 points and a second team from Mt. Holyoke was third with 31. Also finishing ahead of Goucher was Cornell (30 points) in fourth, North Carolina-Charlotte (27) in fifth and St. Andrews Presbyterian (26) in sixth. Goucher earned a team score of 24 points.
Goucher will compete in two more Tournament of Champion events this season: the Holiday Tournament of Champions in Hackettstown, N.J. on Dec. 1 and the Winter Classic in Chatham, Va. on Jan. 26.
