TOWSON, Md. - Only one team finished with a higher score than Goucher today at the first IHSA Zone IV Region I riding show of the season, which was hosted by Mount St. Mary's.
Mary Washington picked up 37 points to take a five-point lead over Goucher (32 points) in the region standings. Maryland and Richmond share third place with 24 points apiece.
With their performances today, the following Goucher riders qualified to compete at the regional championships which will take place in April: Sarah Ashby (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) in advanced walk-trot-canter equitation, Julie Fink (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest School) in intermediate equitation on the flat, and Nina Sysko (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston) in walk-trot equitation.
Fink was awarded first place in her division, as were three other Goucher riders: Brittany Martin (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) in open fences and open flat, Emily Berkowitz (Bryn Mawr, PA/Harriton) in novice flat, and Valerie Wiseman (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) in advanced walk-trot-canter. Fink placed second in her division, as did Boo Geisse (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) in intermediate fences and Claire McMahon (Kings Point, NY/Our Lady of Mercy Academy) in intermediate flat.
After one show, Martin is tied for fourth place in the region's high point rider standings with a total of 10 points. She is only two points behind the leader, Brittany Yates from Richmond.
