Kerns Moves On as Region's Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter Champion
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — As a result of their performances today
at the IHSA IHSA Zone IV Region I Championships conducted at
Carlton Farms, two riders from Goucher qualified to compete at the
Zone IV Championships next weekend in Blacksburg, Va.
April Kerns (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) advances to the Zone IV show as the Region I champion in advanced walk-trot-canter equitation and Karli Postel (Newbury Park, Calif./Oaks Christian School) moves on following a third-place performance in open equitation over fences.
In order to advance to zones, a rider needed to place first, second or third at the regional level. Two additional riders from Goucher — Amory Brandt (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook) in open equitation on the flat and Lori Scott (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) in walk-trot equitation — had spots at zones already secured prior to today's show because there were three or fewer regional qualifiers in their divisions.
The four riders from Goucher and other zone qualifers from Region I will compete against riders from the other two regions at the Zone IV Championships, with those who place first or second advancing again to compete at the IHSA National Horse Show in Lexington, Ky., next month.
Next weekend's show will also produce the two teams that will represent Zone IV in the national equitation team championships in May. Goucher, as champion of Region I, will be challenged by Hollins (Region II) and Virginia Intermont (Region III) and two of the three will advance.
