LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Goucher College equestrian team closed out the 2016-17 season with an eighth place finish at the IHSA National Horse Show.
The Gophers scored a total of seven points over the course of the three-day event, finishing eighth overall in the team competition. They improved on their performance last year at the national event when they completed the competition with five points, finishing in 10th place.
The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) won their third consecutive IHSA National Championship with 32 points. They were closely pursued by Centenary University with 27 points.
Junior Clea Lerner (Los Angeles, Calif.) had Goucher's highest finish of the weekend, taking fourth place in the Novice Equitation on the Flat during Thursday's events. By virtue of the finish, she earned the Gophers three points.
Early next morning, teammate Alison Radgowski (Northport, N.Y.) chipped in with two points, finishing fifth in the Intermediate Equitation Over Fences division.
Later that day, sophomore Wren Wakeman (Addition, Maine) completed Goucher's scoring run, finishing fifth in Walk-Trot-Canter Equitation and earning two more points.
Junior Cary Hundley advanced to the final stage of the USEF/Cacchione Cup Division, which pits the top 16 riders in the nation at all divisions against one another.
She also placed 10th in the Open Equitation Over Fences team event on Saturday, giving Goucher six top-ten finishes during the 2017 IHSA National Horse Show.
This is the sixth consecutive year the Gophers have finished 10th place or higher at the IHSA National Horse Show. Their highest final ranking came during the 2012-13 season when they scored a total of 13 points and finished fifth overall.
