Powlick Wins Ride Off To Win High Point Rider At Mount St. Mary's IHSA Show For Goucher Equestrian
BALTIMORE, Md. – Irene Elise Powlick (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) continues to excel in her freshman campaign after finishing as the High Point Rider at the Mount St. Mary's IHSA Show hosted by Goucher College on Saturday. Goucher was the High Point Team with 39 points while George Mason was second with 37 points.
Powlick finished first in both the open flat and open fences to be one of two competitors to win two classes on the afternoon to force a ride off with Brittany Groat of George Mason. Powlick won to ride off into the sunset of the regular season with the High Point Rider.
Courtney Sloan (Annadale, Va./W.T. Woodson) was the other Gopher that won on Saturday in the intermediate flat.
Rachel Stockslager (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) placed second in the novice flat and the novice fences while Flannery Supplee (Monkton, Md./Hereford) was second in beginning walk trot canter.
Nadia Langer (Chevy Chase, Md./Washington Waldorf) placed third in the novice fences and Wren Wakeman (Addison, Maine/Washington Academy) was fourth in intermediate fences.
IHSA competition is broken up into five categories based on experience. The Open division has the most experienced rider, while intermediate is No. 2, novice is No. 3, walk trot canter is No. 4 and Walk trot is No. 5. The top three categories include two sub-sections; the "flat" which is a pattern that does not include jumping, and a fences section. In addition, when teams are on the road, like the Gophers were at Mary Washington, they are using the horses at the home stable. The riders are judged on their ability to adapt, communicate, and perform with an unfamiliar horse.
Goucher College heads to the IHSA Zone IV Region I Finals at The Other Left Farm in Gaithersburg, Md., on March 24.
