Powlick To Compete In The IHSA Metropolitan Equitation Invitational On Friday
BALTIMORE, Md. – Irene Elise Powlick (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline), a member of the Goucher College equestrian team, will showcase her equitation on the international stage at the Longines Masters New York. Powlick is one of 24 invitation-only riders to be selected to compete in the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) Metropolitan Equitation Invitational on Friday at the NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, in Uniondale, New York, at 3 p.m.
The IHSA Metropolitan Equitation Invitational features talented collegiate equestrians who compete in the Cacchione Cup and Open divisions of the IHSA. The participants draw to compete aboard horses, sight-unseen, on the flat and over a course of fences and will be judged on the riders' effectiveness, style and form. First, the riders compete over fences and the top 12 return to be judged on the flat.
Joining Powlick at the event are Michael Andrade (Centenary University), Merle Beach (St. Lawrence University), Hadley Benneyan (Skidmore College), Thea Chafee (Colgate University), Jennifer Depietro (Johnson & Wales University), Caitlin Doocy (St. Lawrence University), Mia Fellin (Marist College), Michael Golinowski (Bridgewater College of Virginia), Erica Heffernan (Trinity College), Grace Jackson (St. Lawrence University), Cariann Johnson (Sacred Heart University), Samantha Johnson (Washington & Lee University), Sarah Levi (Marist College), Samantha Leuci (Centenary University), Arielle Luogidice (Centenary University), Madison Myro (Centenary University), Blake Portmann (Marist College), Abby Staskel (Drew University), Elizabeth Traband (Penn State University), Hannag Tuckner (Skidmore College), Olivia van der Meer (University of Massachusetts and Alicia Weisman (Rider University).
This event will wrap up Powlick's outstanding freshman campaign. She was the Reserve Open Champion in team open fences at the IHSA Zone IV Championships (April 6) and the IHSA Zone IV Region I Region Champion in both open fences and open flat (March 24). The freshman also was the top finisher of 100 riders at the Mid-Atlantic Equitation Festival (MAEF) Championship and also won the 16-17 Equitation Division and MAEF Open Equitation Over Fences (November 17). At other competitions during the year, Powlick was named the High Point Rider and Reserve High Point Rider once apiece while winning the open flat title five times and the open fences four times in 2018-19.
Established in Paris, Hong Kong, New York, and recently added, Lausanne - the Longines Masters series was inspired by the legendary tennis Grand Slam. It is considered is one of the most prestigious equestrian events in the world. The American leg of the Longines Masters Series will feature international show jumping competition and unparalleled sport with the world's top-ranked equestrian athletes, as well as luxury shopping, dining and entertainment. Each Longines Masters event is broadcast in close to 100 countries and reaches up to 260 million households.
Wren Wakeman (Addison, Maine/Washington Academy) and Cherise Madrid (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) will represent Goucher College equestrian at the IHSA National Championships at the New York State Fairground Expo in Syracuse, N.Y., on May 2-5 in the final event of the year for members of the Gopher equestrian team. Wakeman advanced to the national stage for the second time in her career after being the Zone Champion in the individual walk trot at the IHSA Zone IV Championships on April 6 while Madrid will get her first national exposure after being named the Zone Reserve Champion in the individual walk trot at the Zone IV Championships.
