Wakeman And Madrid To Compete In The IHSA National Championships On Thursday
BALTIMORE, Md. – Wren Wakeman (Addison, Maine/Washington Academy) and Cherise Madrid (Braintree, Mass./Braintree), members of the Goucher College equestrian team, are scheduled to compete at the IHSA National Championships at the New York State Fair Expo Center in Syracuse on Thursday.
Wakeman is making her second appearance on the national stage and the first since the 2017 season while Madrid is appearing at the national level for the first time. Wakeman advanced to the national championship as a senior after earning the Zone Champion title in the individual walk canter at the IHSA Zone IV Championships on April. 7. Madrid was the Zone Reserve Champion in the individual walk trot to earn her spot in Syracuse. Wakeman helped the Gophers to an eighth-place standing at the 2017 IHSA National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky. The senior finished fifth in the walk-trot canter equitation.
This event will mark the final competition of the season for the team. Goucher won the Zone IV Region I title for the 10th-consecutive season and had four riders advance to the Zone IV Championships along with the team. Irene Elise Powlick (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) participated in the IHSA Metropolitan Equitation Invitational, which featured talented collegiate equestrians who compete in the Cacchione Cup and Open divisions of the IHSA. The participants draw to compete aboard horses, sight-unseen, on the flat and over a course of fences and will be judged on the riders' effectiveness, style and form. Powlick did not advance past the first round in the event against some the best riders in the country.
