TOWSON, Md. — Goucher never trailed during regulation, but because the Gophers were locked in a 6-6 tie with Washington (Md.) after 60 minutes, today's game at Beldon Field between the in-state rivals went into overtime.
The Shoremen were able to possess the ball for 1:20 after winning the faceoff to begin overtime before the Gophers managed to get the ball on the ground. Shane Kaski kept the possession alive by scooping up the loose ball and then quickly delivering a pass to Doug Herdegen, who stuck the game-winning goal 1:35 into the extra session, providing Washington with a 7-6 victory.
The Shoremen (1-0) trailed 6-3 after Rory Averett (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) scored for Goucher with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter, but Bennett Cord's even-strength goal with :44 showing on the clock made the score 6-4 through three periods.
Washington outshot Goucher, 13-3, in the fourth quarter and closed to within 6-5 on a goal by Patrick Coyle with 13:22 remaining. Cord's third goal of the contest with 9:59 left to play created the 6-6 tie.
Goucher's Zach Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) tallied the only even-strength in the opening quarter, which ended with the teams tied at 2-2. An unassisted goal by Matt Lynch (Ivyland, Pa./LaSalle College) was the only one scored in the second period and it provided the Gophers (0-1) with a 3-2 advantage.
The Shoremen pulled even at 3-3 2:50 into the third quarter on an unassisted goal by Jim Cusick before the Gophers went on a three-goal run to open up a 6-3 lead. Fratella, who finished with two goals and a pair of assists, scored the goal that snapped the 3-3 tie and fed Lynch for a man-up goal midway through the period to make the score 5-3.
Senior defensemen Justin Dunn (Denver, Colo./Mullen) tied Goucher's single-game school record by causing seven opponent turnovers and sophomore goalkeeper Connor Mishaw (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) made nine saves in the first start of his career with the Gophers.
